Spider Queen

Fine Art Portrait Creation

Artificial Intelligence & Photography

Welcome to another "AI meets Photography" adventure!
It is Halloween season and I suggest we create something spooky today! How about a portrait of a mysterious Spider Queen who makes intricate spider webs to entrap humans and consume them? That is a pretty spooky concept in my opinion.

Let's start with a face of our Spider Queen. This is going to be our base and we will build the rest of the image around it. I decided to go with this portrait of Sarah I took a couple of summers back:

Now let's head over to Midjourney and start building our prompt.
My initial prompt looked like:
portrait of a beautiful woman, spider web,

mysterious, studio light, contrast light, glowing --ar 4:5 --q 5 --s 3750

And these were the first results:

I really liked the idea of the web being a part of the body. Every pose above had a good potential in it, so I decided to make multiple variations of each image to find the best option among all. After some time I started to see what I was looking for:

Image 2

Image 2 was the one that caught my eye. The color palette was beautiful, the balance between the body and the webs was very unique. Most importantly, the light and the pose could go well with the original photo. Although the image coresponded to my vision, I had to fix the proportions and do quite a lot of body sculpting after importing it to Photoshop. Then it was the time to start merging two images together. As you can see below, I had to flip the original horizontally and change the angles of the face in order to make it fit the body the right way. The results looked very promising. However, there was still a lot of work to do:

The hairstyle from the final prompt was not what I was looking for. I was imagining something more voluminous and pronounced for this portrait. I went back to Midjourney and did a few more prompts that were focused on hair mostly. I also created a couple of images of spiders and webs that I wanted to add to the portrait later. I love working on little details! Although you may not notice them, but even a slight shadow can make a lot of difference in our overall perception of the image.

Slowly but surely things started to come together. Spiders were making sure the webs were strong, our Spider Queen was glowing and gracefully waiting for her prey (with an amazing hairstyle that only took me seven years to make, to draw and to blend):

Here is the final result!

Oh my, you really scrolled that far down!
